Short Synopsis of the Book
I have been wanting to write this book for a few years. It feels like life has been preparing me to write it.
I have had the honor to lead and support organizations and territories in their digital transformation around the world. This has been tremendously satisfying. As a result of that work, it has become abundantly clear that if we are to successfully innovate the next major global systems change in our societies – Artificial Intelligence – a fresh mindset, culture and approach is required.
Humanity has made a choice as a global society. We have chosen and agreed to participate in a digital world to support our human experiences and life functions.
This “silicon fabric” is driven solely by data. Your data. Our data. There is no return. We can only move forward. The internet, data centers, microprocessors, integrated circuits, personal computers, mobile phones, app stores, platforms, online services, connected vehicles, automated vehicles, Smart Cities, commerce and government have laid the foundations for this silicon based digital world.
Humanity has committed to integrate its future with a digital world that is based on information and data. So where is this journey going? It is clear that the “bond” between humans and this data-enabled digital world is going to increase exponentially. Perhaps, an experiential integration of data driven organic and silicon based systems? It could be a new evolutionary phenomenon.

From observing and operating in global technology industries and with governments, watching the international debate on data privacy and ownership combined with the Smart City movement, I believe there is a unique opportunity to create a form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is a “personal digital avatar” or “digital twin” to mindfully serve an individual. This kind of invention would significantly stimulate innovation and move economies towards a new generation of “smartly-enabled” automated systems, the result of which would not only support the citizen personally in their life experiences but also invite economic systems towards something new and tremendously exciting. A brave new world.
Artificial Intelligence is inviting humanity to explore the transition into a new paradigm and balance between digital and organic systems. Maybe the great teacher of balanced physical and organic systems, Aristotle, could offer us some useful guidance? Or the great Albert Einstein might invite us to consider that a future human reality is “attracting” and inviting us to co-create a thrilling societal transition? Is the future calling to us backwards over time to create something incredible for our society? Maybe. AI-enabled societal systems can provide a powerful new balance and equilibrium between organic and digital eco-systems offering the possibility for everyone to be mindfully supported within a society. It is clear that Artificial Intelligence is offering humanity an opportunity for us to create a thrilling future. An invigorating dynamic between human and digital eco-systems, where AI plays an enabling role within the natural human and societal evolutionary path.

The battle has started across the world as territories frantically rush to create various forms of AI, combined, I hope, with flavors of ethical and data ownership philosophies. Disappointingly, many organizations and authors avoid the hard questions or even consider at the heart of the debate the benefits that data privacy and ownership by the citizen could mean to the future of a democracy, its social equity, its environmental integration and its economic structure.
Furthermore, we should also consider the benefits of large scale AI systems. There is no turning back from the mass digital transformation enabled by the Smart City and the Smart Region movement which is driven by global and local challenges. Every single person within society is affected in some way or another and so will generations to come. The entire purpose of Smart Cities is to create data-oriented economies that serve communities and the citizen. We are creating new systems for our families and future generations. We must innovate forward mindfully (see whitepaper “Building Smart Cities Mindfully“). Future generations are waiting patiently in the wings and will judge us on our intent and performance.
This is what I define as “Citizen of the Future Mindset“. I will explain why this mindset is important and how this increases the impact of innovating forward into our future.
IoT-based systems are the first stage of creating “smartly-enabled” systems for cities and regions. These technologically driven systems are becoming more prominent using a huge range of IoT technologies (deployed from the sensor to the edge to the cloud). The mass digitization of the urban and built environment enables economic transformation, optimization of public services, for jurisdictions to remain competitive and enhance the quality of life of its residents.

However, there is a clear opportunity to migrate from these systems that lack distributed intelligence throughout the built environment and move to the first iteration of a scalable and distributed systems AI architecture for Smart Cities – the next generation of IoT. The benefits would result in a significant increase in automation, performance, mobility and personalization of the citizen experience within any jurisdiction. Imagine a city being “self aware” with AI integrated and distributed throughout the built and mobile environment both “listening” and “interacting” either directly or indirectly to optimize a person’s life experience? This is the next transition of IoT, from simply being a vertical “listening” type of experience deployed throughout the built environment to an integrated and distributed system that is “aware” of its purpose to serve people and communities. I am suggesting a deeper integration of organic and digital eco-systems.

The opportunity and benefits for innovation and development of AI-centric systems distributed within a city and region are huge. AI systems within AI systems. Just like human, animal and other complex organic systems that holistically function using distributed systems, with intelligence and dedicated operation, which, when combined together, provision a complete and comprehensive organic life intelligence and experience. “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” as the saying goes.
So, what is a “personal digital twin”? Is it possible to create a data life form or intelligence that is self-aware? Do we need one? What would be the impact on society? How important is regulation on data ownership and privacy to create this “digital avatar”? If a citizen owns their data what would be the benefits over a democracy that does not regulate data ownership? Can data ownership enable a new citizen trading currency? In regards to Smart Cities or Regions, what could a scalable and distributed AI architecture look like – SmartCity.AI? How could you create and train these AI systems, validate such a system and what would be the benefits to society once realized? Do we need a new approach to innovating AI? If so, why is a new approach so important? What are the benefits over traditional innovation philosophies?
This book seeks to answer these questions. In addition, it also proposes a set of principles on how to mindfully create:- a personalized AI for each citizen comprising of their personal data DNA living within the cyber world referred to as a “digital twin”; a new approach to distributed large scale AI architectures and systems deployed throughout the built and mobile environment enabling the next generation of fully automated Smart City services and experiences – engaging mindfully with the citizen and its “digital twin”. Holistic alignment and mindful integration of the organic and digital worlds.

Finally, this book seeks to inform and encourage global debate amongst government and territorial stakeholders, encouraging them to roll up their sleeves, work together and self-determine their future. Failure to do so, could result in a future that is determined by an outside force not aligning with their ethics or principles. Artificial Intelligence is an incredibly sensitive subject and responsible nations will do the work to create and leverage ethically enabled AI-centric systems mindfully based on their vision for their democracy and citizens within their territory. The very future of an economy and its global status could be determined by the motivation and choices made!
